Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography), GS-649-00, Primary & Specialty Medicine at Saint Cloud

JOB SUMMARY:

Note:  The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8.  The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-6 to GS-8.  The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Incumbent will operate and monitor echocardiograph equipment when performing highly specialized examinations and studies to determine heart wall measurements and heart function.  Incumbent identifies and records anomalies indicative of disease, injury or other medically significant conditions and when gross abnormalities appear, repeat certain procedures, stop test procedures, and/or immediately contact the Cardiologist or Provider.  Evaluates test results to determine appropriate machine adjustments and uses alternative techniques and procedures when established procedures do not accomplish acceptable results.  Incumbent works under the medical direction of the Cardiologist or Cardiology Provider.  Incumbent independently performs the full range of electrocardiograph procedures to include but not limited to 2-D echocardiograms, Doppler echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms, M-Mode echocardiograms and TEE.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. 
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English

 

Preferred Experience: No certificate is required; however it is desirable that all employees at these levels have Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

 

Grade and salary will be determined by a professional standards board


GS-6: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the GS-5 grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled.

 

GS-7: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the GS-6 grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled.  This would be experience which provided the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abiltities to independently conduct difficult but standardized echocardiographic examinations.

 

GS-8: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the GS-7 grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled.  This would be experience which provided the overall knowledge, skills, and abilities to conduct diagnostic echocardiography examinations in complex and unusual cases.
